“A place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his image.” – Joan Didion
The River House provides a distinct and singular accommodation in the heart of the Imnaha Canyon, 30 miles northeast of Joseph.
From our River House, take the opportunity to explore this geographically diverse and breathtaking corner of Eastern Oregon. Be sure to include Hells Canyon, the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve, and Wallowa Lake. Sample a taste of the American West during the Chief Joseph Days rodeo, join the Native American dancing at the Tamkalicks Powwow, or sign up for a class in traditional crafts from the Prairie Folk School. Relax in the hammock and take a nap.
The Wild and Scenic Imnaha River is sure to lull and inspire you in this quiet canyon setting. Enjoy fishing from its banks, swimming, or just watching it from your chair under the grape arbor. Marvel over the mature landscaping with a vegetable garden and orchard, hand stacked rock walls and enormous shade trees. Feeling adventurous? Fire up the sauna and cool off with a dip in the river.
Inside the spacious yet cozy home you’ll find 50’s decor, inspired by our western heritage. Much of the River House is crafted from re-claimed, re-purposed lumber, including the support beams which came from a dairy barn outside Lostine. You’ll find everything you need to prepare those beets or tomatoes you picked from the garden in our well-equipped kitchen. Now, light the grill, clean that fish you just hooked, and serve it on the deck.
Enjoy a soak in the claw-foot tub, borrow a book from our library and retire to one of three bedrooms featuring down comforters, quilts, and old-fashioned charm.
Stay a week, stay a month!
